Zebras, elephants, lions and tigers, a rhinoceros, and hippos–especially hippos–rollick through the pages of this gay and witty picture book.
Every animal in the jungle had his secret hiding place, it seemed, except Little Hippo. The leopard hid in shadowy places; the tiger chose deep grass. Pottos curled up in trees. But Little Hippo was the pet of the herd, and whatever he did or wherever he went the big hippos hovered about him, taking care of him. "What fun is a walk with nineteen hippos?" Little Hippo said crossly.
Young children, who sometimes feel the same way about their elders, will agree with him. But most of all, they–and their elders, too–will chuckle with delight at Little Hippo's frantic efforts to find his own secret place "where he can be alone, but not too alone."
