This perfect companion to A Home is filled with beautiful and detailed paintings which mirror life on a farm in rural Sweden at the turn of the century.
Carl Larsson longed to own a farm with cows and horses, pigs and chickens. When the opportunity came to buy Spadarvet. the farm next door to the Larsson home in the country, he did so.
Johan and Johanna ran the farm for him, and he set about painting every scene imaginable. Spadarvet was a working farm, and Carl Larsson shares with us scenes such as Johan and Backstrom cutting wood in the snowy forest, Little Esbjorn, his son, with Johan in the carpenter's shop, Tekla and little Kersti leading the frisky cows to pasture in the sun-drenched woods, the children digging potatoes in the fields, and everyone at service in the village church.
Carl Larsson's love of the land and the people around him is evident in the way he has captured the farm in each season with all going about their work and play with gaiety and contentment in their faces.

Carl Larsson is one of Sweden's best-loved artists. His stunning watercolours of his home and family from the end of the nineteenth century are acclaimed as one of the richest records of life at that time. The accompanying text provides a fascinating insight into farm life, and into Carl's painting techniques. Today, over 60,000 tourists a year visit Sundborn to admire Larsson's home and work.
