Allumette is a darker, reimagined version of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Match Girl" that subverts the original's tragic ending. In Ungerer's story, the impoverished orphan girl, Allumette, is granted her wishes for warmth and food, but instead of dying, she uses the endless supply of goods to create a global foundation to help the world's poor, subverting the original's bleakness with a message of charity and social responsibility.
