By the author of the delightful modern fairy tale, Cabbage Moon, and illustrated by the noted artist Edward Gorey, Cobweb Castle is an amusing non-fairy tale in which the bumbling non-hero becomes involves in a comedy of errors in his search for riches and romance.

Flemming Flinders, a latter-day Man of La Mancha, who sells onions and potatoes in a greengrocery, dreams of princesses and hidden treasures. One fine day he abandons the greengrocery and set forth in search of his dream-world – armed only with his imagination and a kerchief on a stick in which to put his gold, when he finds it.

Thus begins a series of cockeyed misadventures as Flemming's imagination leads him to much delightful nonsense such as mistaking a pedestrian young lady living in a run-down summer house for a beautiful princess reigning the castle!
