This is a unique anthology of stories, legends, fairy tales and fables of people everywhere, past and present. From the words of actor Danny Kaye: "I think I can safely say that I do not know all the stories in the world and that I haven't even come close to meeting all the world's children. But I have, indeed, traveled through almost every country in the world several times and heard quite a few tales–tall, small and indigenous–and met quite a few youngsters of every size, shape and state of mind, and it was in the course of one of my far-flung junkets for UNICEF that it occurred to me how wonderful it would be if it were possible to introduce all the children in the world to all the stories ever told. It would be almost as wonderful as introducing all the children to one another. And that is how this book came to be...." Danny Kaye was the first ambassador-at-large of UNICEF in 1954 and received the French Legion of Honour in 1986 for his years of work with the organization. With gorgeous illustrations from a variety of illustrators including Leonard Everett Fisher, Peter Marks, Loretta Trezzo, Tom O'Sullivan, Paul Bacon, Anthony D'Adamo, Louis Glanzman and Jeanyee Wong.
Note: First published in 1958, this collection reflects the cultural views of its era. The stories and illustrations present many world cultures in simplified or stereotyped ways and include some outdated terminology. While a nostalgic and visually rich book, it is offered with this note for clarity and historical context.
