"I was so excited the day we went to town," said Jafta. "Mother cooked us tea and said, 'Hurry, hurry, hurry.' Uncle Josh helped us pack, and just as the mountains began to light up, we set off."
Jafta's journey from his rural South African village to the town where his father works in a factory is everything he had hoped for and more. Although most American children will never take a trip quite like this–first via oxcart, then bundled into a bus crowded with people, boxes, and animals, and finally aboard a ferry pulled by a line of men–they will have no trouble sharing in Jafta's excitement.
