Lucille was a horse. She worked hard in the farmer's fields, pulling his plow. But every time she saw her reflection in a puddle, she was sad. "I am dull and dirty," she would say. And although the small pig assured her this was the proper way to be, Lucille was not consoled.
But the farmer's wife agreed with her. And after a shopping spree in town, Lucille wore a hat with a rose, four shiny shoes, and a beautiful white dress. She and the farmer's wife were delighted, but the farmer–and the small pig–were not. They much preferred Lucille-the-horse to Lucille-the-lady.
The way in which Lucille comes to agree with the farmer and the pig is utterly hilarious. No beginning reader will ever forget the tea party at which Lucille was guest of honor, and its unexpected – and unladylike – finale. Arnold Lobel's first I Can Read Book® will be welcomes with laughter and enthusiasm.
