The story follows 5-year-old Robin, who hears a strange "murmel, murmel, murmel" noise coming from a hole in her sandbox. Reaching inside, she pulls out an abandoned baby. Since Robin is too little to care for a baby, she packs it up and carries it through the neighborhood to find a new home for it.

She encounters several people, but none of them are a good fit: The woman with 17 cats doesn't want the baby and ends up being chased by seventeen cats; a busy, rich businesswoman is too focused on her 17 jobs; a grumpy man wants to know if the baby can wash his car or make him money. When Robin explains a baby is for "loving, hugging, and burping," he rejects the idea entirely.

Finally, a massive truck stops in front of her. The friendly truck driver hears the baby talk, realizes he desperately wants a baby, and eagerly trades his truck for the child. Robin is left with a truck, and the driver walks off happily with the baby.
Robert Munsch wrote the book as he and his wife were adopting their first son. The character Robin was based on a next-door neighbor who was also adopted.
