Why do people have troubles? Why doesn't the sun shine every day? We all wonder about this. People have always asked these questions, and most have come up with some kind of answer. For the ancient Greeks, the answer was the story of Pandora.
In very ancient times, the story says, everything was wonderful. People had everything they needed and day after day of happiness. But they forgot to give thanks to the gods for all these good things. So Zeus grew angry and decided to do something to remind people of their blessings. The result was Pandora, a beautiful woman whom he and the other gods had created and sent to Earth with a special box that she was not to open.
Who can resist opening a box, especially one that seems like a gift, a present from the gods? And that is what the story is about. Pandora, the box, and what was in that box, because of course it was opened.
