The Golden Picture Book of Words opens up a magic world. In 31 lively stories more than 400 words are featured. The words are shown in clear drawings so that the child learns through familiar pictures. Because they are closely related to the child's own experiences, the stories are easy to read. At the same time, they are planned to build a sound basis for future progress in reading.

NY Times review from 1949: Here is a good Christmas Day book for 4-to-8-year- olds. While grown-ups bustle about, children and their guest cousins can find a quiet corner and amuse themselves by looking at and discussing the 500 illus- trations which make this book so gay and colorful. Perhaps, too, an older child will read aloud some of the stories while the younger ones listen for the words which are illustrated in marginal drawings and full-page pictures opposite each story. These thirty- seven stories describe children's everyday experiences, such as a trip to the store, a train-ride, a day at the seashore.

Combining some of the features of a dictionary and an encyclopedia, the book has a definite educational value. For example, with the story on "Ships and Boats" eleven pictures of various types are shown and described in the text. Similarly, "Up in the Sky" includes descriptions and captioned illustrations of clouds, sun, stars, moon and northern lights.
